Hong Kong finance chief urges public to learn AI amid job concerns
The four-day Hong Kong Computer and Communications Festival runs Aug. 21 to 24 and highlights an “AI and digital transformation” zone for practical applications.
Humanoid robots, 3D printers, and artificial intelligence hubs are on display at Hong Kong’s annual electronics and technology exhibition, where the city’s Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po urged residents to build skills in using AI.
According to SCMP Economy, the four-day Hong Kong Computer and Communications Festival, themed “AI connect: let’s link the future,” is being held from August 21 to 24 at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, featuring an “AI and digital transformation zone.”
Chan, speaking at the opening ceremony, said the festival’s focus on practical AI use and future trends is timely and aligns with Hong Kong’s broader direction of “AI for all.”
He also acknowledged public concerns raised by AI’s rapid advance, including impacts on jobs, privacy, governance, and security, while arguing that people who learn to use AI effectively can benefit rather than be left behind, pointing to AI agents that allow individuals and small teams to complete large projects.
