China smart carmakers face PCB and capacitor shortages as costs surge
Industry officials estimate a 20 to 30 percent component shortage, with PCB and MLCC prices more than tripling over the past year.
Chinese smart vehicle makers are dealing with a new constraint as a global components shortage overlaps with higher raw material costs, a challenge tied to demand growth linked to the artificial intelligence boom, according to the South China Morning Post.
The report says printed circuit boards and multilayer ceramic capacitors, two components used to support vehicle intelligence and autonomy, will likely take at least a year for supply chains to ramp up production to meet rising demand.
South China Morning Post cites an industry view that the global auto sector is facing a 20 to 30 percent shortage of components, while prices have more than tripled over the past year.
Chen Jinzhu, CEO of the consultancy Shanghai Mingliang Auto Service, told the outlet that even small components play a key role in efforts to make millions of cars more autonomous and smarter.
