Chinese research ship sails near Taiwan naval base again

Taiwanese authorities said the Tong Ji was spotted 28 nautical miles southwest of Liuchiu, after a similar sighting in the central Taiwan Strait on Thursday night.

A mainland Chinese scientific research vessel, the Tong Ji, was spotted sailing close to Taiwan’s largest naval base area for a second time in recent months, according to Taiwanese authorities.

The 2,000-tonne Tong Ji, operated by Tongji University in Shanghai, was detected on Friday morning about 28 nautical miles (52 km) southwest of Liuchiu, an island also known as Lamay, near Kaohsiung and Zuoying.

On Thursday night, the ship was previously spotted about 25 nautical miles northwest of Hua island in the central Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan dispatched a coastguard vessel to shadow the ship and attempted to force it to change course, South China Morning Post reported.
