Hong Kong customs investigates HK$100,000 beauty sales allegations

The probe follows claims that an 88-year-old’s credit card was swiped four times over three hours, totaling HK$100,000 for skincare, a device, and 24 detox sessions.

Hong Kong customs is investigating allegations that an 88-year-old woman was pressured into spending HK$100,000 on beauty products during a sales visit at an outlet linked to Avinichi inside Wing On’s department store in Sheung Wan, according to SCMP Economy.

The allegations surfaced in a social media post by a woman surnamed Ng, who said her mother was targeted in April during an ordeal that lasted about three hours.

Ng said that after an initial transaction, the salesperson allegedly did not return the mother’s credit card and instead kept it in a folder while continuing to sell additional products. She also claimed the card was swiped four times over the period, with charges totaling HK$100,000 for skincare products, a beauty treatment device, and 24 detoxifying sessions.

SCMP Economy reported that Ng said the woman’s helper tried to intervene and suggest leaving, but that the selling continued. The investigation is described as part of a broader wave of complaints in Hong Kong’s beauty product sector following a crackdown on the local operations of Opatra London.
