Myanmar military air strike kills 14 at monastery during Buddhist Lent
The strike reportedly hit a meditation hall in Myaung township around 9:00am, killing 11 men and three women, according to rebel witnesses cited by SCMP Economy.
A Myanmar military air strike on a monastery where civilians were gathered for a meditation retreat marking Buddhist Lent killed 14 people, according to testimony from rebel fighters who witnessed the aftermath, as reported by SCMP Economy citing Agence France-Presse.
The attack struck a monastery hall around 9:00am in Myaung township in the central Sagaing region, killing 11 men and three women, according to Nway Oo Myaung, a pro-democracy rebel who helped clear bodies.
Witnesses said older people had entered the meditation center for a three month retreat and that those killed were reportedly aged between 50 and 70, with the outlet also reporting that rebel witnesses characterized the attack as intentional rather than a mistaken target.
SCMP Economy also noted that Myanmar has been engulfed in civil conflict since the military staged a 2021 coup, detaining Aung San Suu Kyi and ousting the elected government, and that more than 100,000 people are estimated to have been killed over the past five years across the conflict.
