Hong Kong to review typhoon warning as Tropical Storm Narra nears coast
The Hong Kong Observatory said Narra was about 650 km west of the city early Saturday, with higher risk of turning toward the Leizhou Peninsula and western Guangdong next week.
Hong Kong’s weather forecaster said it will assess early next week whether to issue typhoon warning signals as Tropical Storm Narra is expected to edge closer to the western Guangdong coast, the South China Morning Post Economy reports. According to the Hong Kong Observatory, Narra is forecast to linger over the vicinity of Beibu Wan, also known as the Gulf of Tonkin, before a higher chance to turn east to northeast gradually early next week.
The projected track would bring the storm closer to the vicinity of Leizhou Peninsula and the coast of western Guangdong, and the Observatory said it will monitor the storm’s movement and changes in local wind conditions to determine whether warning signals are needed.
For the week ahead, the forecaster expects cloudy and rainy conditions, with coastal areas becoming windier and seeing occasional heavy showers and squally thunderstorms from early to midweek, and sunny intervals not expected until Friday. As of 8am Saturday, Narra was about 650 km (403 miles) west of Hong Kong with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h (40 mph) near its centre.
