Sensex and Nifty 50 close flat, extend losing week amid oil and US yields
Brent crude is up 4% for the month and traded above $93 per barrel, while the Sensex fell 0.6% and the Nifty 50 dropped 0.5% for the week.
India’s benchmark Sensex and Nifty 50 ended flat on 21 August, extending losses for a second straight week as investors pointed to elevated oil prices, stalled US Iran talks, and rising US bond yields, according to LiveMint Markets.
The Sensex finished 3 points higher at 77,540.83, while the Nifty 50 settled 20 points higher, a gain of 0.08%, at 24,252. The Nifty Midcap 150 rose 0.08% and the Nifty Smallcap 250 climbed 0.41%.
For the week, the Sensex slipped 0.6% and the Nifty 50 declined 0.5%, leaving both indices down more than half a percent for the month and potentially snapping a two month winning streak.
LiveMint Markets cited Brent crude up 4% for the month after a 24% jump in July, with prices trading above $93 per barrel. It also noted US Vice President JD Vance said the war with Iran has entered a new phase, and quoted Geojit Investments’ Vinod Nair saying worries about elevated global bond yields persist, with India’s 10 year yield rising on RBI hawkish signals and local inflation risks.
