Port of Los Angeles reports second-best July container volume on resilience
Executive director Eugene Seroka said the LA and Long Beach ports handle 40% of U.S. containerized imports and 30% of exports, spanning all 50 states and 435 congressional districts.
The Port of Los Angeles logged its second-best July on record for container volume despite uncertainty for shippers tied to looming tariffs and higher fuel prices, executive director Eugene Seroka said at Connect Industrial West 2026, according to ConnectCRE.
Seroka pointed to the scale of the LA and Long Beach port complex, saying it accounts for 40% of the nation’s containerized imports and 30% of exports, with cargo moving to all 50 states and every one of the 435 U.S. Congressional districts.
In the interview at the August 20 event, Seroka argued that industrial development planning needs to account for economic cycles and also invest through political and election cycles, rather than reacting to each shift in policy.
He also described how changing trade policy has created a “whipsaw” effect for market participants, keeping customers and tenants cautious as they weigh timing and investment decisions.
