Stickney leaders oppose Digital Realty bid for Hawthorne Race Course

Digital Realty, via Allimac 2023 LLC, bought the 108-acre Hawthorne Race Course for $90M in a bankruptcy sale, but a six-month moratorium on data center approvals could delay any redevelopment plans.

A developer tied to Digital Realty has moved to buy the 108-acre Hawthorne Race Course in suburban Stickney for $90M in a bankruptcy sale, and local leaders are pushing back over potential plans for a data center, according to Bisnow.

The deal followed Hilco Global marketing the site as a redevelopment opportunity, with parties involved saying a data center could be allowed under existing regulations, while a Stickney spokesperson said it would be considered a novel use requiring village approval.

Stickney Mayor Mitch Milenkovic said he opposed data center development on the site, pointing to a six-month moratorium the village board approved Aug. 4 covering data center zoning, licensing, development, and permit approvals.

Bisnow reported that the moratorium is intended to signal that data center construction is unwelcome in Stickney, creating additional uncertainty for the buyer’s next steps at the Hawthorne site.
