Cyber attack shuts small power plant, UK says wider grid unaffected
The government contacted power companies after the July incident, saying it affected only a small-scale generator and not the wider UK energy system.
A small power plant in the UK was shut down during a cyber attack, the government said, adding that there was never a risk to the wider energy system, BBC Business reported. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) said the incident affected a small-scale generator.
For security reasons, neither the government nor the National Cyber Security Centre, which handles attacks on critical infrastructure, provided further details about the site affected. BBC Business reported that a separate outlet said the attack occurred last month, and that hackers affiliated with the Iranian regime were responsible, without further confirmation from the government.
DESNZ said it contacted power companies to advise them about potential cyber-attack risks following the incident. The update comes as the UK works on improving cyber security regulations and developing a new energy resilience strategy later this year.
BBC Business also noted that the UK power network includes smaller gas generators that can provide short-term power when needed, making supply protection a key policy challenge. The report said the event was not an attack on an essential service such as a large power station.
