Cyber attack shuts small power plant in UK, government says

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero says the incident affected only a small scale generator and did not threaten the wider UK energy system.

A cyber attack led to the shutdown of a small power plant in the UK, with the government saying there was no risk to the wider UK energy system, BBC Business reports. The attack occurred in July.

The UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero contacted power companies to advise them on potential risks from cyber attacks after the incident. The Daily Telegraph reported that hackers affiliated to the Iranian regime carried out the attack last month, according to BBC Business, which also notes that neither the government nor the National Cyber Security Centre provided further details for security reasons.

BBC Business reports the government said the incident affected only a small scale generator, not an essential service like a large power station. External reporting cited by the outlet said the plant was shut down for four days.

The UK is updating its cyber security regulations and working on a new energy resilience strategy later this year, BBC Business reports, citing concerns about protecting supplies amid a broader risk of state linked cyber activity tied to the ongoing conflict with the United States.
