Iran says new US sanctions threat is a sign of US desperation
Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said the country has “never been afraid” and dismissed the US plan as likely to fail, even as Iran’s president acknowledged inflation and livelihood problems.
Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the prospect of additional US economic sanctions as a desperate attempt to pressure Tehran, saying the approach shows Washington is running out of options beyond earlier moves.
Araghchi said in a Telegram video that the US has “moved on from military operations” to reviving similar sanction plans, adding that Iran has not been afraid and that US actions, including blockades and other military moves, have failed.
The comments came hours after President Masoud Pezeshkian said Donald Trump has thrust Iran into what he described as a full-scale economic, military and security war, while also acknowledging Iran’s internal pressures.
Pezeshkian said the country is trying to address inflation and livelihood problems, along with unemployment, and the article notes that recent waves of mass protests have often been tied to economic hardship, including inflation and exchange-rate swings that have hurt purchasing power.
