South Pacific island nations seek security guarantees amid China tensions
The article says Beijing has responded to both Western defense moves and China outreach by warning cooperation should not target third parties or be used for geopolitical games.
According to SCMP Economy, Western countries are moving to sign defense pacts in the South Pacific to extend their influence in a region that has long been neglected.
The outlet says island leaders are pursuing a different approach, leveraging the competition between China and the West to secure security guarantees from Western partners while China expands infrastructure and deepens its economic presence.
SCMP Economy also reports that Beijing has issued similar responses to both developments, arguing that cooperation should not be aimed at any third party and should not be used to “engage in geopolitical games.”
