India coastguard searches after Panama-flagged cargo ship sinks
The Ocean Winner was carrying iron ore to Singapore and sank about 240 nautical miles from Paradip, after the coastguard lost communication with the vessel.
India’s maritime rescue agency lost communication on Saturday with a Panama-flagged cargo vessel that sank off the country’s east coast, the Indian coastguard said, according to Reuters.
Reuters reported the ship, the Ocean Winner, had 24 crew on board, including 20 Chinese nationals, three Myanmar nationals and one Bangladeshi. The coastguard dispatched two vessels for a search-and-rescue mission from Sri Vijaya Puram, where two people were rescued from life rafts.
According to Reuters, the search-and-rescue operation is ongoing for the remaining seafarers. Government sources cited by Reuters said the vessel was carrying iron ore to Singapore after departing India’s eastern Paradip port on Thursday, and it sank around 240 nautical miles (448 km) from the port.
