Chinese carmakers eye full-hybrid rivals as hybrid sales climb
SCMP Economy reports Geely Auto and Changan Automobile are growing hybrid electric vehicle sales, supported by claims of advantages in smart-driving features and in-car entertainment.
Chinese automakers are shifting their competitive focus beyond electric vehicles, aiming to take share from international leaders in full-hybrid models as hybrid sales attract domestic buyers, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet points to major Chinese manufacturers including Geely Auto and Changan Automobile, saying their hybrid electric vehicle performance has lured consumers away from models such as Toyota's Prius.
SCMP Economy also cites consultancy CEO Chen Jinzhu, who attributed the growing appeal of Chinese-developed HEVs to strengths in intelligent features and computing power, which he said can translate into better smart driving and in-car entertainment versus international rivals.
The report adds that Chinese makers are developing new hybrid models with potential advantages on pricing and fuel efficiency, and it describes how HEVs combine an internal combustion engine with an electrical system, including charging batteries or directly powering electric motors.
