Brazil candidates clash on Chinese investment and US tariffs

The debate aired as Brazil said it plans to retaliate against US tariffs that partly target measures tied to former leader Bolsonaro and his son Flavio Bolsonaro.

Brazil’s presidential candidates kicked off the televised campaign season with a debate focused on the country’s position between Washington and Beijing, reflecting an election already shaped by American tariffs and Brazil’s evolving ties with China, according to SCMP Economy.

In the discussion, candidates weighed US tariff actions that Brazil said partly aim to free former leader Bolsonaro and his son Flavio Bolsonaro, as well as a separate visa dispute over election monitoring.

SCMP Economy reports that Brazil’s president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has said he would skip debates if they became a forum for what he described as nonsense, while Flavio Bolsonaro linked his attendance to Lula’s.

The outlet also noted that televised debates are expected to set the tone for the campaign, with Zema withdrawing shortly before the event and other candidates taking part.
