David Einhorn adds $61.5 million stake in PayPal amid rebound
PayPal shares are down about 79% from their 2021 peak, but the stock has climbed about 5% year-to-date in 2026 after Q2 earnings beat estimates.
David Einhorns DME Capital Management added to its position in PayPal during the second quarter, buying 1.42 million shares worth $61.5 million as of June 30, according to Yahoo Finance. The move drew attention as PayPal shares have struggled over the long term but have rebounded more recently.
The outlet said PayPal shares are roughly 79% below their 2021 peak, though they are up about 5% year-to-date in 2026 and close to a 39% gain over the past three months. Over the past 12 months, however, the stock is down about 9%.
Yahoo Finance attributed the recent rebound to PayPals Q2 results and improving expectations around a turnaround, even as competition from Stripe and Block and concerns about growth and investment spending continued to weigh on sentiment.
The article also cited valuation and performance metrics, saying PayPal trades at about 11.7 times earnings versus a sector median near 14 times, and that its Q2 revenue rose to $8.68 billion, up 5% year-over-year and above an $8.51 billion estimate. It added that adjusted EPS was $1.38, about 8% above the $1.28 consensus, while noting that earnings and free cash flow progress are central to the renewed optimism.
