Hong Kong to roll out free preschool dental check-ups from Sept. 1

The Department of Health will send dental teams from 23 participating service providers to kindergartens in all 18 districts once each academic year, screening children aged 32 months or older.

Hong Kong will begin offering free dental check-ups to preschoolers starting September 1, under a new government oral health initiative announced by the Department of Health.

The Outreach Oral Health Programme for Preschool Children will provide free oral screenings and risk assessments for pupils aged 32 months or older, with dental teams from 23 participating service providers visiting kindergartens across all 18 districts once each academic year.

Officials said the program targets the period between ages three and six, when children’s milk teeth are at a crucial stage for prevention efforts, and that conducting exams in a school setting is intended to help ease young children’s anxieties.

The announcement comes as the health department said more than 70 percent of the city’s kindergartens have already signed up for the scheme.
