India’s intelligence buildup against China raises miscalculation risk
A Chinese academic warns India’s expanded use of space, drone, and cyber intelligence could increase the chance of unilateral countermeasures after the Galwan clash.
Routine Chinese activities are increasingly being framed as threats by Indian intelligence agencies, a Chinese academic warned, raising the risk that New Delhi could miscalculate and take unilateral countermeasures against Beijing, according to a paper published July 31.
The academic, Zhao Ruoxi, analyzed India’s China-focused intelligence operations from 2020 to 2026, in research appearing in the Chinese-language Journal of Intelligence run by the Shaanxi Institute of Science and Technology Information.
The warning comes against the backdrop of the Galwan Valley confrontation, which killed 20 Indian and four Chinese troops and pushed relations to a historic low, the SCMP Economy notes.
Zhao said India has expanded its intelligence-gathering toolkit in recent years, including space-based reconnaissance, drone surveillance, and cyber intelligence, to build a multi-agency network against China.
