Indian rupee weakens as dollar strengthens amid Middle East tensions

The INR’s drop is tied to risk-off dollar demand, while traders monitor oil moves and possible Reserve Bank of India intervention to smooth volatility.

FXStreet reports the Indian rupee edged lower as the US dollar strengthened on Monday, supported by safe-haven demand as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East escalated.

The outlet links the risk-off mood to comments from Iranian officials dismissing upcoming US sanctions and warning of possible retaliation, which bolstered demand for USD and weighed on the INR.

FXStreet adds that the rupee tried to hold up early in the week, helped by strong capital inflows. Pressure eased temporarily when crude oil prices dipped as investors took profits ahead of expected US announcements on Iran sanctions.

Looking ahead, the story says the INR may face renewed pressure if oil prices rebound on expectations of stricter sanctions, supply disruptions, and continued high risks around the Strait of Hormuz. FXStreet notes Deutsche Bank pointed to Brent futures pricing longer potential disruption as a sign markets are reassessing how long supply constraints could last.
