Indian stocks end week lower as crude, yields and geopolitics weigh
WTI was around $86 a barrel ahead of expected fresh U.S. sanctions on Iran, while the week saw SmallCap rise about 1.2% versus a nearly 0.6% Sensex drop.
Indian equity markets ended the week on a cautious note, extending a recent correction as elevated crude oil prices, rising global bond yields, and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty weighed on sentiment, according to LiveMint Markets.
For the week, the Nifty slipped around 0.47% to finish at 24,252, while the Sensex fell nearly 0.60% to 77,540.83. Volatility remained high as indices recovered at points during the week, but Friday’s session closed largely flat.
The broader market showed mixed performance, with the SmallCap index rising around 1.2% while the MidCap index edged down marginally. For Monday, Gift Nifty signaled a positive open, trading near 24,329.5, up more than 43.5 points from the prior close of Nifty futures.
LiveMint Markets cited persistent Middle East tensions and firmer crude prices, noting WTI was near $86 a barrel as markets braced for fresh U.S. sanctions against Iran. It also highlighted Monday watchlist triggers including Reliance Industries shareholder approval of three resolutions on August 20, an FDA Form 483 with four observations after an inspection of a Hyderabad finished dosage formulations facility between August 17 and 21, 2026, and Power Grid’s successful bid under the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding process for an inter state transmission system in Gujarat to support renewable energy projects.
