Indonesia to ship 1,000 tonnes of premium rice to Malaysia
BULOG expects the initial shipment signed under an Aug. 14 MOU to scale toward annual exports of 200,000 tonnes.
Indonesia plans to enter the rice export market with an initial shipment of 1,000 tonnes of premium rice to Malaysia, according to BULOG, the state food logistics agency.
A memorandum of understanding was signed between BULOG and Malaysia’s Padi dan Beras Borneo Sdn. Bhd. on Aug. 14 in Jakarta. BULOG said the first consignment is expected to be followed by gradual growth in annual exports to 200,000 tonnes.
Indonesian Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said the country holds about 5.2 million tonnes of rice stocks, and that exports would not undermine domestic supplies, ANTARA reported.
The US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service forecast Indonesia’s milled rice production at 33.6 million tonnes for marketing year 2026-27, and said Malaysia’s rising rice consumption is supported by population growth, while imports are expected to stay around 1.6 million tonnes due to insufficient domestic output.
