Taiwan unveils Strong Bow missile specs ahead of funding bid

Taiwan plans to resubmit Strong Bow through a supplementary budget that could be considered by the cabinet as early as Thursday, seeking NT$36.1 billion to produce two systems and 128 interceptor missiles.

Taiwan has disclosed technical specifications for its Chiang Kung, or Strong Bow, anti-ballistic missile system, as the government seeks legislative funding to mass produce the weapon to strengthen the island’s air defences amid pressure from Beijing, according to SCMP Economy.

The National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology said the system uses two stage solid fuel propulsion, an inertial guidance setup with radar uplink corrections during midcourse flight, and an active electronically scanned array radar for the terminal phase. It is described as a land based mid tier anti tactical ballistic missile designed to intercept incoming missiles at altitudes of at least 70 km, higher than Taiwan’s Patriot and Tien Kung III systems, the outlet reported.

The disclosure also comes after Strong Bow was excluded from a pared back special defence spending package approved by an opposition controlled legislature in May. Taiwan’s defence ministry plans to resubmit the program through a supplementary budget, with the cabinet potentially considering it as early as Thursday before lawmakers review it.

The ministry has proposed NT$36.1 billion, or about US$1.13 billion, to produce two Strong Bow systems and 128 interceptor missiles, the report said.
