Tesla recalls 2.98 million cars in China over hidden door handles

Tesla has initiated a recall in China covering 2.98 million Chinese-made vehicles over concerns tied to hidden retractable door handles, which officials say are difficult to locate and open during emergency situations, according to BBC Business.

The report says the issue is part of what it calls China’s biggest car recall, affecting more than 4 million vehicles in total, with other brands named including XPeng, Xiaomi and Geely.

Tesla said in a statement that it is recalling some Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles because the door handles are difficult to identify and operate due to their color blending with interior trim. The company also said it will add warning labels and issue a software update to automatically lower windows after a collision.

BBC Business adds that the controversial handle design has prompted further scrutiny, including a probe by US safety regulators after reports the handles stopped working and trapped children in cars. Under new rules due to take effect on January 1, 2027, cars sold in China will only be allowed if they have a mechanical release on both the inside and outside of their doors.
