Trump invested up to $50,000 in SpaceX shares in June

The purchase was filed in disclosures signed Aug. 12 and made public Aug. 22, and it links the president financially to a major U.S. space contractor as policy shifts could affect SpaceX.

U.S. President Donald Trump invested as much as $50,000 in Elon Musk's SpaceX in June, according to a public financial disclosure reviewed by Reuters.

The disclosure says Trump bought between $15,001 and $50,000 in SpaceX shares on June 23, as part of more than 1,000 stock trades he made during the month.

Reuters reports SpaceX held its initial public offering on June 12, a deal that set IPO records, and the SpaceX stake adds another financial link between the president and Musk's rocket company.

Reuters also notes that SpaceX is a U.S. military contractor that often seeks approvals from federal agencies, at a time when the administration is directing efforts to substantially increase the number of U.S. commercial space launches.
