VCIA conference highlights captive insurance growth and evolving strategies
The 41st annual event in Burlington ran Aug. 11 to 13, drawing close to 1,200 attendees, 75 exhibitors, and more than 350 captive owners.
The 41st annual Vermont Captive Insurance Association conference, held in Burlington from August 11-13, brought together captive industry practitioners and experts from around the world, with close to 1,200 attendees. According to Risk & Insurance, the conference also featured 75 exhibitors and more than 350 captive owners, who used the event time to network and hold captive board meetings. Risk & Insurance reports that the 2026 agenda included more than 30 educational sessions covering advanced captive strategies, reinsurance trends, tax changes, innovative technologies, and professional development for captives at different stages of formation. The outlet also notes Vermont is a leading onshore captive insurance domicile, citing more than 1,200 licensed captive insurance companies in the state. A key theme at VCIA 2026 was how mature captives are shifting from a specialized insurance product toward a broader risk management tool. Sessions focused on making captives work harder strategically, including exploring adding coverages, new structures, and alternative approaches to risk financing as capacity changes in the traditional market. One highlighted session, “Evolution of a Captive: Capitalizing on Opportunities,” used a case study to describe expanding a captive, including setting total risk appetite, engaging reinsurers to manage aggregate exposure, and reducing overall external insurance spend. Risk & Insurance adds that speakers discussed using multi-line aggregate limits for diversification and determining when a re-feasibility study may be necessary.
