bunq expands beyond travel banking as rates fall and AI adoption rises

The Dutch digital bank says it is absorbing the impact of lower market rates, including keeping savings rates among Europe’s most competitive.

European digital banking competition is shifting away from customer acquisition toward becoming users’ primary financial relationship, and bunq is positioning itself in the middle of that change, according to an interview with Joe Wilson.

Wilson, bunq’s chief evangelist, said the bank, which has surpassed 22 million users, is expanding beyond its travel-focused proposition into everyday banking as falling interest rates and AI reshape digital banking economics and the customer experience.

He said bunq’s AI assistant, Finn, supports 38 languages, resolves queries in 47 seconds, and offers real-time speech-to-speech translation, and that the bank is using features such as Stocks Baskets and flexible crypto staking to encourage customers to centralize more of their finances.

Wilson added that as market rates came down, bunq chose to absorb the impact rather than pass it to users, including keeping savings rates among the most competitive in Europe and paying interest weekly rather than monthly.
