Canada retaliates with $20B in tariffs on US imports

The new duties, set to run from September 8, are expected to complicate how commercial insurance brokers assess replacement values, business interruption risk, and cross-border trade exposures.

Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion worth of US imports, adding further uncertainty for businesses operating along the US-Canada border, Insurance Business reports. The measures, announced by Canadian finance minister François-Philippe Champagne, will apply tariffs of 15%, 25% or 50% on hundreds of US products starting September 8. The list includes steel, dairy products, and agricultural equipment, with Canada matching tariff rates Washington imposed on equivalent Canadian exports.

Insurance Business said the rapid change in trade conditions could force commercial insurance brokers to revisit risks between insurance renewals, since financial impacts can flow into insured values, replacement costs, and business interruption exposures. It noted that companies reliant on cross-border components may need to reconsider supplier concentration and sourcing if tariffs change the economics of their arrangements.

The article highlighted that declared values may also need adjustment if tariffs increase the acquisition cost of equipment, inventory, or materials. It added that the automotive sector appears particularly exposed because manufacturing operations across the two countries are deeply interconnected, with parts and finished vehicles frequently moving across the border during production and distribution.
