Data centre plan withdrawn in Kota Damansara after resident objections

Petaling Jaya City Council received about 290 objections by July 21 before the developer withdrew the application nine days later to reassess site feasibility.

Residents in Section 9 in Kota Damansara, Malaysia, expected a vacant plot beside a community forest to be developed as a high street retail project, but Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) received an application for two three-storey data centre blocks instead, according to SCMP Economy.

The outlet said data centres are often positioned by governments as catalysts for foreign investment and digital jobs to support cloud computing and the AI economy, while nearby residents raised concerns over potential impacts including noise, water use, traffic, and whether the land is suitable.

SCMP Economy reported that by July 21 the council had received about 290 objections, and nine days later MBPJ announced the developer’s consultant had withdrawn the application to reassess site feasibility and development components.

SCMP Economy added that the proponent walked out, and local media reported two days later that the proposal had been withdrawn.
