Experts warn big-dog owners in Hong Kong over heat and space
The warning came after two attacks in the past week, including a woman found dead and two small dogs mauled to death.
Experts in Hong Kong urged residents to reconsider keeping large or aggressive dogs as pets, citing heat, humidity, and crowded living conditions that can make proper care harder. The guidance followed two separate attacks last week. A woman was found collapsed in Ping Yeung Tsuen after being attacked at a dog training centre by a canine suspected to be a mixed-breed fighting dog, and she was certified dead at the scene. Earlier in the week, two small dogs were mauled to death in Yuen Long by an unleashed 60kg mastiff-type canine, according to SCMP Economy.
SCMP Economy reports that Lau Yun-yu, chairman of the Hong Kong Society for Pet Nutrition, said large dogs, especially those with thick coats, may struggle in Hong Kong’s hot and humid climate. He noted that dogs cool mainly through panting rather than sweating, and that sustained high humidity can reduce their ability to cool themselves effectively.
