Galaxy: 1,789 BTC stolen in Coldcard hack, 87% still unmoved
Galaxy Research attributed the theft of 1,789.28 Bitcoin to the Coldcard hack and said the funds were worth $114.7 million at the time, with attackers still holding 1,561 Bitcoin.
Galaxy Research says 1,789.28 Bitcoin stolen in the Coldcard hardware wallet hack remains largely in attacker-controlled addresses, with attackers not moving most of the funds.
According to a Monday X post by Alex Thorn, Galaxy’s head of research, the bitcoin stolen from 8,865 addresses was worth $114.7 million at the time of theft. Thorn said attackers have not spent 1,561 Bitcoin, or 87.3% of the attributed losses, and that the remaining holdings include all Bitcoin stolen during the first three attack waves.
Galaxy’s latest tally draws partly on 221 victim reports covering 790.72 Bitcoin in losses, or 44.2% of the total Galaxy attributed to the hack. The median loss per report was 1.04272 Bitcoin, so more than half of the reported cases involved losses above 1 Bitcoin.
The report also notes that some Bitcoin from later attacks has moved through CoinJoin transactions and peel chains, while the largest stolen holdings remain visible onchain. Galaxy said it has shared identified attacker addresses with crypto exchanges, compliance firms, and law enforcement to help freeze funds if they reach centralized intermediaries.
