Hong Kong exports jump 50.7% in July on AI electronics demand

July exports rose to HK$672.5 billion, while imports increased 41.0% year on year and the city ran a HK$4.9 billion trade deficit.

Hong Kong’s merchandise exports surged 50.7% year on year in July, helped by rapid growth in artificial intelligence related electronic products, according to provisional data from the city’s Census and Statistics Department cited by SCMP Economy.

The value of exports reached HK$672.5 billion (US$86.2 billion), after a 53.4% rise in June. SCMP Economy reported that exports also climbed across most major markets, reflecting broader demand for AI electronics.

The government said it expects global demand for AI related electronics to continue supporting trade development, despite geopolitical risks in the Middle East and rising trade protectionism in some advanced economies.

Imports rose 41.0% year on year to HK$677.4 billion, leaving Hong Kong with a trade deficit of HK$4.9 billion, or 0.7% of import value.
