China avoided criticism after North Korea launched more than 10 missiles

North Korea fired the short-range ballistic missiles just hours after Wang Yi ended a two-day Seoul visit, while Beijing said it had only “noted the reports” and made no new comment.

South China Morning Post Economy reports that China did not issue fresh criticism after North Korea launched a barrage of more than 10 short-range ballistic missiles into the sea east of the Korean Peninsula.

The launches came just hours after China’s top diplomat Wang Yi concluded a two-day visit to Seoul, his first official trip to South Korea in nearly five years, according to the outlet.

South Korea and Japan condemned the firing as a provocation, while China’s foreign ministry said the next day it had noted reports and did not have any new comment, underscoring a focus on Pyongyang’s stability over near-term denuclearisation, as analysts cited by the outlet put it.

During meetings in Seoul, Wang urged South Korea to pursue “genuine strategic autonomy,” avoid taking sides between China and the United States, and move toward “peaceful coexistence” with North Korea, the report said.
