India’s stocks end higher as Iran sanctions lift commodity jitters
Nifty 50 settled up 0.17% at 24,260 and the Sensex rose 0.21% to 77,511, despite mixed midcap and smallcap closes tied to Middle East tensions and new U.S. sanctions on Iran.
Indian equities finished the session higher on August 25 after late buying pulled the market back into positive territory, even as sentiment stayed fragile amid escalating Middle East tensions.
The Nifty 50 closed 0.17% higher at 24,260, while the Sensex ended up 0.21% at 77,511. The broader tape was mixed, with the Nifty Midcap 100 closing in the green and the Nifty Smallcap 100 down 0.22%.
Sector performance was split, with pharma and consumer durables gaining nearly 1%, while private banks and metal stocks were the biggest decliners. In the commodity market, oil prices fell after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced fresh sanctions on Iran and warned that countries continuing business with Tehran could face retaliation.
Among individual stocks, Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) led gains, jumping 11.4% to ₹874 after Russia assured India of uninterrupted energy and fertiliser supply. Vodafone Idea rose 8% to ₹15.20 on reports of progress in funding discussions with SBI, while Cyient gained 7% to ₹9.
