Iran threatens retaliation after US launches sanctions targeting oil trade
The US Treasury sanctioned 60 individuals, entities, and tankers, while Operation Economic Outcast targets Iran trade partners with a wind down period.
Iran threatened an aggressive response to new US sanctions announced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, warning Tehran is “fully prepared” and that its posture is no longer “defensive,” Reuters reports via an interview quote from Iran’s economy minister Ali Madanizadeh.
The US announced an enforcement push called “Operation Economic Outcast,” aimed at Iran’s trade partners and giving them an unspecified period to wind down activities involving Iran, while Washington also sanctioned a total of 60 individuals, entities, and tankers.
The sanctions focus includes oil trade, according to analysts cited by Reuters, and the US list did not include major Chinese financial institutions believed to be facilitating Iran’s oil shipments.
Iran also warned of potential military action in response to the measures before they were formally announced, while Madanizadeh said Russia and China had not accepted the new US sanction moves and expected other trade partners to resist.
