Japan Monkey Centre to close for renovations ahead of multi-year reopening
The zoo in Inuyama, Aichi prefecture will close its gates on Oct. 19 after scaling back to weekend and holiday openings from September.
The Japan Monkey Centre in Inuyama, Aichi prefecture, will close from mid-October as it renovates ageing facilities before a reopening that is expected to take several years, the South China Morning Post reported, citing Kyodo.
The facility, home to about 700 monkeys across roughly 50 species, will begin limited public access from September, opening only on weekends and holidays, and it plans to close fully from Oct. 19.
During the shutdown, the center plans to post updates about the monkeys via social media, and it will hold events for registered members.
The outlet also noted the zoo’s iconic bonfire tradition dates back to 1959, and it has been operated since 2014 by a non-profit foundation linked to Kyoto University, with operating costs covered through admission fees and donations solicited under the name “Goshien.”
