UK and Kyiv plan AI model using Ukraine data to secure UK sites
The pilot will use AI-optimized sensors in buried fibre-optic cables to detect movement at a UK defence site and, if proven, could expand to airports, prisons, railways, and energy infrastructure.
London and Kyiv have agreed to use Ukrainian battlefield data to train AI systems aimed at protecting sensitive sites in the UK, including defence installations and critical infrastructure. According to the Guardian Business, the initiative is designed to help identify protesters and hostile-state threats.
The project will be piloted at a UK defence site using AI-optimised sensors installed in buried fibre-optic cables to detect different kinds of movement. The UK government has suggested the technology could later be applied at airports, prisons, railways, and energy infrastructure if the system works as intended.
The agreement also allows private companies to access data from Ukraine’s Avengers AI lab once it is approved by the UK Ministry of Defence and shared via a secure platform, a step that is likely to raise concerns among privacy campaigners, the outlet said.
Pilot projects have already been approved with three British AI companies, including Sintela, Mind Foundry, and Skyral. The Guardian Business added that Sintela recently signed a $35 million deal with the Trump administration to provide surveillance on the US-Mexico border, and tied the Ukraine partnership to building new UK security systems trained on operational drone and strike mission footage.
