Vishal Mega Mart reappoints Gunender Kapur through Aug 2031

The retailer is expanding to 819 stores across 559 cities, and its Q1FY27 revenue rose 19% year over year to ₹3,730 crore.

Vishal Mega Mart said its board has reappointed Gunender Kapur as managing director and chief executive officer for a five year term running from 1 September 2026 through 31 August 2031, a move aimed at removing uncertainty around top management continuity. The stock fell about 2% on Tuesday after gaining roughly 10% the prior day following the decision, according to LiveMint Markets.

LiveMint Markets said Motilal Oswal Financial Services had previously flagged key-man risk tied to CEO continuity beyond June 2027 as a crucial overhang in its review of the company’s June quarter results. The article notes there has been management churn, including the appointment of a new vice-president and head of internal audit and a new chief of operations in June, along with recent changes in senior FMCG and supply chain leadership.

The article also highlights ongoing pressure from promoter stake sales. In February, Samayat Services LLP, backed by Kedaara Capital, sold nearly 14% of Vishal Mega Mart, reducing promoter holding from 54.1% to 40.1%, and it says shares were additionally made eligible for trading after lock-ins expired in July.

On fundamentals, LiveMint Markets reported Q1FY27 revenue grew 19% year on year to ₹3,730 crore, supported by 10% same-store sales growth and an 11% increase in retail area. It added 24 net stores in the quarter, bringing the total to 819 stores across 559 cities and retail space to 13.8 million sq. ft., while EBITDA margin held steady at 14.6% and pre-Ind AS EBITDA margin increased 25 basis points to 10.2%.
