AI adoption is forcing actuaries to rethink training and accountability
ERGO NEXT chief actuary Philip Natoli says AI is producing reserve-study work in seconds, increasing the volume of analyses actuaries must still review and own.
AI is moving rapidly into actuarial work, changing how teams train new talent and raising new pressure to maintain professional rigor, according to Insurance Business.
Philip Natoli, chief actuary at ERGO NEXT Insurance in Palo Alto, California, said many actuarial staff now use AI assistants as their primary interface for daily tasks, naming Claude, GPT, and Gemini.
Natoli described how AI can reproduce technical entry-level work that used to take human effort, including generating reserve-study output almost instantly after being prompted with a dataset.
While he said AI enables faster production of high-quality analyses, he emphasized that actuaries remain accountable for each result, creating what he called a bottleneck for the trust and rigor that the profession must uphold.
