Canada announces retaliatory tariffs up to 50% on US goods
The measures target more than 700 US product categories and take effect September 8, with some existing steel and aluminum tariffs set to double to 50%.
Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on up to US$19.94 billion of American goods as its trade dispute with Washington escalates. The tariffs, effective September 8, will cover more than 700 categories of US products at rates of 15%, 25% or 50%.
The targeted items range from steel, aluminum and agricultural equipment to household appliances, clothing, cheese, seafood, cosmetics and electronics. Canada also said existing tariffs on some US steel and aluminum products will double from 25% to 50%.
Counter-tariffs on American-made vehicles will remain at 25%, according to the Canadian government. Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said the measures are intended to defend Canadian workers and businesses, matching US tariffs “dollar for dollar, rate for rate,” rather than to raise revenue.
SCMP Economy reported that the move comes days after negotiations collapsed and the Trump administration imposed sweeping new duties on Canadian products.
