Gartner flags AI-driven cyber vulnerabilities as top emerging risk

The report warns AI vulnerability discovery could outpace defenses, raising the odds of significant cyber incidents and operational disruption.

AI has moved to the center of corporate risk planning, with Gartner identifying AI-enabled discovery of cyber vulnerabilities as the top emerging risk for organizations worldwide, according to a new report. Gartner said rapid advances in AI are increasing leaders’ concerns that previously unknown vulnerabilities will be found and exploited more quickly.

Gartner also warned that without improvements in governance, security operations, and remediation capabilities, AI-driven vulnerability discovery may move faster than organizational defenses. In that scenario, the report says the likelihood of significant cyber incidents and operational disruption increases.

Beyond cyber vulnerabilities, Gartner cited other AI-related emerging risks, including agentic AI, information integrity risk, and an AI workforce preparedness gap. It said leaders are concerned agentic AI could take actions not aligned with organizational policies, goals, legal requirements, and ethical principles, potentially leading to operational disruptions, compliance challenges, and reputational harm.

The report also noted that information integrity risk, previously the top emerging concern, was ranked fourth in the second quarter, tied to reduced access to accurate information from unreliable datasets, AI-generated content, and politicization of data. The AI workforce preparedness gap remained fifth, reflecting concerns that AI-enabled roles could outpace organizations’ ability to build employee proficiency. Gartner added that the only non-AI risk in the top five is geopolitical energy supply shocks following the Middle East conflict, with the risk not previously appearing in the top five.
