Iran blacklists 45 tankers tied to Strait of Hormuz oil exports
The move is expected to disrupt ship-to-ship transfers used by the UAE and Saudi Arabia to route Gulf oil to larger export tankers, ahead of new US sanctions.
Iran issued a blacklist of 45 vessels over alleged violations of rules for transiting the Strait of Hormuz, warning it will take action against any listed ships used for cargo through the waterway, Reuters reported.
Three Indian refining companies and “a global energy major” plan to stop using tankers on the list, Reuters said, citing unnamed sources. Tehran also said ships on the blacklist could face fines, detention, and cargo confiscation.
Reuters added that the clampdown is likely to affect so-called shuttles used by the UAE and Saudi Arabia to move oil out of the Persian Gulf and transfer it to larger tankers for export.
The blacklist announcement came a day before the US Treasury unveiled a new sanctions package targeting entities linked to Iranian oil shipments and payments routed to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and other Iranian bodies, Reuters reported.
