Netherlands likely to miss winter gas storage target of 115 TWh
Gasunie said current conditions leave the country insufficiently prepared for a worst-case harsh winter without additional policy, as European inventories are at their lowest in 17 years.
The Netherlands is set to miss its target for filling natural gas storage ahead of winter, Gasunie said, warning that it will not reach a planned level of 115 terawatt-hours.
Gasunie Transport Services had set the goal based on the amount of gas needed during the harshest winter of the past 30 years, but the operator said the target is no longer achievable.
While Gasunie said the miss does not automatically mean winter supply will be inadequate or that security of supply is at risk, it warned that without additional policy the country is insufficiently prepared for a scenario where winter is among the harshest.
The warning comes as European gas inventories are at the lowest in 17 years and available supply is tighter than ahead of the 2022-2023 winter, with Qatar LNG flows now mostly cut off amid the Strait of Hormuz crisis, according to OilPrice.
