Recalls volume surges as regulators intensify oversight in 2026
Sedgwick data shows recall events were nearly flat in H1 2026, but recalled units jumped to 941.2 million, putting 2026 on pace to exceed 1 billion.
Recalled product units across five sectors jumped to 941.2 million in the first half of 2026, up from 211.3 million in the first half of 2025, according to Sedgwick’s Product Safety and Recall Index.
The report said overall recall events were roughly steady, with 1,634 recalls in H1 2026 versus 1,636 in H1 2025, but the volume of affected units rose as regulators tightened scrutiny across industries.
Sedgwick found that pharmaceutical and medical device recall units each increased more than 500%, while food recall volume governed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture climbed nearly 2,500%.
The index also pointed to a shifting regulatory backdrop, including disruption tied to the conflict with Iran, new tariffs, and stronger enforcement of country-of-origin claims by the USDA and Federal Trade Commission, plus FDA efforts to modernize inspection procedures for medical devices and pharmaceuticals.
