SK Hynix union vote rejects tentative wage deal by 25 votes
Workers opposed a deal that would have raised wages 6.3% and revised profit-sharing, including shifting more bonuses into company shares.
South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix said its union members narrowly rejected a tentative wage agreement in a Tuesday vote, according to a source familiar with the matter, after ballots were tallied.
Of 15,045 workers who cast votes, 50.08% rejected the deal, a gap of just 25 votes, the source said. SK Hynix was not immediately available for comment when contacted by Reuters.
The agreement reached last week included a 6.3% wage increase and changes to the profit-sharing bonus scheme, with 40% of bonuses paid in cash and 60% in company shares. Reuters reports the push toward more share-based compensation met resistance from some workers concerned about share price volatility.
SK Hynix is the world’s second-largest memory chipmaker and has benefited from strong demand for AI-focused high-bandwidth memory chips. Shares were trading down 4.9% versus a 2.2% decline in the benchmark KOSPI as of 0036 GMT.
