Zelensky asks China to play a stronger diplomatic role on Ukraine war
The appeal follows Xi sending Kyiv a public Independence Day congratulatory message for a second straight year after Russia’s invasion.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged China to use a stronger diplomatic role to help end the Russia-Ukraine war, while posting what he said was a letter from Chinese President Xi Jinping. Zelensky wrote on X that China’s cooperation and diplomatic involvement are important to bring the conflict to an end, adding that peace could be a shared achievement.
Zelensky said Xi’s message marked Ukraine’s Independence Day, and he shared copies of both the Chinese and Ukrainian versions he posted on Monday. He also noted that Beijing has sent Kyiv such public congratulatory messages for a second consecutive year since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, though China has not published the latest letter.
The SCMP Economy reports that the appeal comes more than four years into the war as ground fighting continues and the humanitarian crisis worsens, with no major diplomatic breakthrough in sight. China’s position on the conflict remains under international scrutiny, particularly as its closer partnership with Moscow has complicated Beijing’s efforts to repair ties with the European Union amid strategic rivalry with the United States.
