Clean-tech startup Voya Energy raises $35M for aluminum-based power
The funding, led by Energy Impact Partners, will support a pilot starting in 2027 for data centers and other large energy users that face capacity and permitting constraints.
Voya Energy, a California clean technology startup, raised $35 million to develop an aluminum-based energy system intended to generate electricity with zero emissions. The company says its approach uses an aluminum-based metal fuel and a purpose-built generator to convert the fuel directly into power through an electrochemical process.
According to Mining.com, Voya’s initial work is aimed at supporting data centers, industrial operators, and other large energy users that face limited local power capacity and permitting challenges. The company also positions the system as a way to reduce community concerns tied to new generation projects, including noise and air pollution.
The project includes converting low-grade scrap aluminum into engineered pellets for storage and transportation, and using Voya’s proprietary electrolyte and metal-air cell technology. It does not require combustion, produces no air emissions at the point of use, and can operate independently of the utility grid, the outlet said.
Voya Energy plans to pilot the system in companies across industrial manufacturing, data centers, emergency response, and energy infrastructure starting in 2027. Mining.com added that the ultimate goal is to use metal fuels over time as a replacement for fossil fuels in various applications, particularly for on-site critical power.
