AI data centers push global electricity demand sharply higher
Global data-center electricity use rose to 787.8 terawatt-hours in 2025, up from 658.2 TWh in 2024, according to the Energy Institute’s 2026 Statistical Review of World Energy.
OilPrice reports that data-center electricity demand is accelerating globally, driven in part by the AI boom, with the United States singled out as a leading contributor.
According to the Energy Institute’s 2026 Statistical Review of World Energy, global data-center electricity consumption reached 787.8 terawatt-hours in 2025, rising from 658.2 TWh in 2024.
The outlet notes the pace of increase is also steep over a longer window, with demand up from 410.8 TWh in 2020, a roughly 92% increase in five years, implying nearly 14% average annual growth.
OilPrice also highlights that the growth is concentrated, stating the United States and China dominate global data-center electricity use and that the load is becoming more central for utilities, grid operators, regulators, and power producers to plan for.
