Brazil rare earth magnet production delayed until at least 2032

A Brazilian magnet pilot plant coordinator said early batches are possible by late 2028, but only using imported processed inputs.

Brazil will likely not be able to produce rare earth permanent magnets from its own raw materials until at least 2032 to 2035, keeping China’s near monopoly on the technology intact for years, according to SCMP Economy.

Andre Luis Pimenta de Faria, who runs the Senai magnet pilot plant, said first batches could come by the end of 2028, but only if the plant uses imported inputs because it currently relies on Asian process technology and buys processed ore for its furnaces.

SCMP Economy also reports that Brazil does not make electrolytic iron, a separate high-purity input, despite the country being among the world’s top iron ore exporters.

Pablo Cesario, chief executive of the Brazilian Mining Institute, said the timeline may be optimistic, citing an average gap of 17.2 years between proven reserves and first production in Brazil.
