U.S. in talks with Venezuela to take direct stakes in oil fields
The discussions reportedly cover high-yield fields with about 90 billion barrels of proven crude, which would expand U.S.-controlled reserves and reshape Washington’s foreign energy policy framework.
OilPrice reports the Trump administration is in active discussions with Venezuela’s interim government about acquiring a direct U.S. ownership stake in key Venezuelan oil fields.
According to senior U.S. officials cited by Axios, the proposed deal would involve equity in a select group of high-yield fields holding roughly 90 billion barrels of proven crude, drawn from Venezuela’s broader 303-billion-barrel reserve base.
The assets targeted in the talks were previously operated by Venezuelan state interests, joint-venture partners, and Chinese state-backed entities.
OilPrice adds that the White House push for direct equity is arriving amid supply disruptions and elevated energy prices, with the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve depleted to historic lows and Middle East transit routes facing ongoing threats.
